The fifth edition of the Korosho Marathon is scheduled to take place on November 28, 2026, in Mtwara Region, Tanzania. The event, launched in Dar es Salaam, aims to promote athletics, the cashew industry, and tourism in southern Tanzania. More than 3,500 participants are expected to participate in the marathon, which will feature various races, including 21-kilometre, 10-kilometre, and five-kilometre races, as well as a 2.5-kilometre children's race.
The Korosho Marathon coordinator, Nelson Mrashani, announced that over 450 participants had registered by the time of the launch, with online registration continuing to attract interest. He urged those who have not registered to do so as soon as possible, as the registration is expected to close early due to the large number of anticipated participants. The event has gained popularity, drawing runners from Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and other areas, thanks to attractive prizes.
The marathon has various sponsors, including the Cashewnut Board of Tanzania and Makangilo Company Limited, which are sponsoring the 21-kilometre race. Mix by Yas is supporting the 10-kilometre category, while Exim Bank sponsors the five-kilometre Fun Run. CRDB Insurance is supporting the children's race. An exhibition involving small and large businesses will run from November 25 to 28, bringing together traders and stakeholders in the cashew industry.
The Korosho Marathon aims to make the event more than just a race by bringing together businesses and stakeholders in the cashew industry, while providing entertainment for residents and visitors to Mtwara. Former athletics star Filbert Bayi, who was the guest of honour, said the event offered an opportunity to promote Mtwara's cashew industry and showcase Tanzania as a producer of quality cashew nuts.
Filbert Bayi added that promoting the various uses of cashew nuts, including in food, beverages, and oil production, could increase its value. Cashewnut Board of Tanzania Director of Operations Edward Mwangila said the event also supported local processing, noting that the proportion of cashew nuts processed domestically had risen from about five per cent before the marathon was introduced to 40 per cent.
The initiative aims to improve farmers' livelihoods and boost the economies of Mtwara and Lindi regions. Mix by Yas Government and Institutional Relations Manager Suleiman Yasir said the company's sponsorship reflected its commitment to giving back to cashew farmers and combining agriculture with sports. The event is expected to have a positive impact on the local economy and the cashew industry.
As the event approaches, participants and spectators are eagerly awaiting the fifth edition of the Korosho Marathon. With its unique blend of athletics, business, and entertainment, the marathon is set to be an exciting and memorable experience for all involved. The event will not only promote the cashew industry but also provide a platform for athletes to showcase their skills.
