The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Ghana, has initiated land preparation for the construction of a new 400-bed Mother and Child Block. The proposed block is expected to bring a wide range of maternal, neonatal, and reproductive healthcare services under one facility, replacing the hospital's existing maternity unit. The facility will include obstetrics and gynaecology wards, labour and delivery suites, operating theatres, and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
The 400-bed facility will also feature a High Dependency Unit, Intensive Care Unit, IVF and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre, antenatal and postnatal clinics, fertility and reproductive health clinics, and breastfeeding and family planning units. Additionally, the block will have an Emergency Obstetric Care Unit, diagnostic imaging department, laboratory, blood bank, pharmacy, and rehabilitation units.
One of the key components of the proposed facility is the IVF and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre, which will provide fertility and reproductive health clinics alongside antenatal and postnatal services. These facilities aim to expand the range of reproductive and maternal healthcare services available at Korle Bu.
The Mother and Child Block will also include diagnostic and support services such as laboratory and blood bank facilities, a pharmacy, and a Central Sterile Services Department. Physiotherapy and rehabilitation units, as well as facilities for teaching, research, and conferences, are also part of the plan.
For now, the project is at the land preparation stage, with officials announcing the planned facilities. However, a completion date or information on when the new block will begin receiving patients has not been provided. The project is expected to replace the existing maternity unit with a larger facility designed to provide maternal, neonatal, and reproductive healthcare services at Korle Bu.
