Kongwa District Commissioner, Mayeka Mayeka, has suspended the leadership of Njoge Village in Tanzania's Dodoma region. The suspension follows allegations of irregular land sales involving village grazing areas and farmland. The move aims to address persistent conflicts among village leaders that have hindered development activities in the area. Mr. Mayeka stated that strong decisions were necessary to resolve the situation and ensure development can proceed.
The suspended leaders will remain off-duty pending decisions by the district authorities and the completion of investigations by the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB). Mr. Mayeka emphasized that the conflicts have affected the village's development and that decisive action was required. The PCCB has summoned other officials for interrogation as part of its investigation into the allegations of irregular land sales.
During a meeting in the village, Mr. Mayeka highlighted the need for unity and cooperation among leaders to facilitate development. He also directed the village chairperson to comply with the requirements governing village leadership, including residing in the village they serve. This directive implies that the chairperson must either move to Njoge or relinquish their leadership position.
Kongwa District Executive Director, Dr. Omary Nkullo, has urged village leaders to work collectively and avoid forming divisions. He warned that selective cooperation with certain officials could deepen disagreements and undermine development efforts. Dr. Nkullo called on leaders to advise and support one another to improve service delivery to residents.
Njoge Ward Councillor, Mr. Josephat Mponda, attributed the ongoing conflict to divisions among village leaders. He alleged that some leaders had leased out sections of village grazing areas for personal gain without involving residents or other leaders. This has contributed to the prolonged conflict in the village.
Residents of Njoge have expressed concerns over the leadership disputes, alleging that senior officials, including the chairperson, are unwilling to accept criticism. They claim that the disagreements among leaders have hindered development and accused some leaders of leasing out village land for personal benefit.
The suspensions and PCCB inquiry aim to resolve leadership disputes and investigate allegations concerning the management and use of village land in Njoge. The district authorities seek to address the root causes of the conflicts and ensure that development activities can proceed smoothly. The outcome of the investigations and the fate of the suspended leaders remain to be determined.
