Kogi State Government has initiated discussions with prominent Kuwaiti institutions to secure financing, technical expertise, and investment partnerships for various development projects. The talks, which followed a high-level visit to Kuwait by Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo and senior officials, aim to implement Kogi's 2024-2056 Development Plan. The plan encompasses projects in water infrastructure, agriculture, energy, education, solid minerals, and industrial development.
During the visit, Ododo met with Acting Director-General of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED), Rashaid A. Al-Bader, and presented Kogi's development priorities. The governor emphasized the state's potential in water resources, agriculture, solid minerals, strategic location, and emerging energy opportunities. He highlighted these areas as capable of supporting job creation, food security, and industrialization with proper infrastructure and technical expertise.
The Kuwait Fund has expressed its readiness, in principle, to collaborate with Kogi on priority projects, subject to technical, financial, and institutional appraisal processes. Proposed areas of cooperation include water infrastructure, irrigation, agricultural transformation, power and renewable energy, solid minerals, and beneficiation. The partnership could also provide support for project preparation, feasibility studies, and technical assistance.
Ododo emphasized the interconnectedness of the proposed areas, explaining that investment in water infrastructure would benefit communities and agriculture, while irrigation could expand all-season farming and improve food production. Reliable electricity, he added, would strengthen agro-processing and industrial activities. Developing and processing solid minerals locally could enable Kogi to capture more value from its mineral resources.
The governor's delegation also engaged with Kuwait University on potential collaboration in education, research, innovation, engineering, agriculture, water-resource management, and technology. Both sides explored opportunities for knowledge exchange, research collaboration, and capacity development involving tertiary institutions in Kogi. A possible sister-government relationship with Al Ahmadi Governorate was also discussed.
Further discussions were held with Kuwait's Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, Subaih Abdulaziz Al-Mukhaizeem, focusing on water infrastructure, irrigation, renewable energy, and power development. The talks are particularly relevant to Kogi's plans to expand irrigation, promote all-season agriculture, and improve energy infrastructure for industrial growth.
A key outcome of the visit is the commencement of a technical process to develop the understandings reached during the engagements into concrete projects. The technical teams will undertake project documentation, feasibility studies, and other preparatory activities required to determine the viability and financing structure of proposed projects. Ododo expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the Federal Government's diplomatic support and commended the Nigerian Embassy in Kuwait for facilitating the engagements.
