The Kogi State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening medical education and healthcare delivery at the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) Teaching Hospital, Okene. This commitment was made by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Hon. Kingsley Femi Fanwo, and his counterpart in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Taiye Abanika, during an inspection of the medical students' hostels and doctors' quarters. The inspection aimed to assess the facilities being developed to support clinical training, research, and improved healthcare services.
The inspection provided an opportunity for the commissioners to evaluate the progress of the facilities and the impact on medical education and healthcare delivery. Fanwo described the development as a demonstration of "vision extension," highlighting the continuity in governance and development. He recalled that the former Governor Yahaya Bello established the Reference Hospital, which was later transformed into CUSTECH Teaching Hospital by the present administration of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo.
Fanwo expressed satisfaction with the quality of the students' accommodation and the quarters, noting the spacious rooms, reading areas, wardrobes, bathrooms, and toilets, as well as the provision of solar power and internet connectivity. The facilities were designed to provide medical students with an environment that supports serious academic work and research, particularly during the clinical stages of their training. He also stressed the importance of the doctors' quarters, citing the proximity of doctors to the hospital, which would enhance clinical response and make it easier for medical personnel to attend to emergencies.
The Commissioner for Information and Communications linked the initiative to the administration's broader effort to attract and retain qualified medical professionals in Kogi State. He noted that creating a conducive working and living environment is essential to strengthening healthcare delivery. Fanwo also highlighted the government's investment in medical education, which aims to produce doctors who can compete professionally anywhere in Nigeria and around the world.
