The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has urged the government to take immediate action to prevent the spread of the Ebola virus after Kenya confirmed its first case. Health CS Aden Duale announced on Tuesday that the patient, a Kenyan national, had lived in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for 7 years before arriving in Kenya. The patient received supportive treatment but sadly passed away on Monday.
KMPDU Secretary-General Dr. Davji Atellah stated that all healthcare workers who may have come into contact with the patient must receive immediate medical monitoring, psychological support, and follow-up. He emphasized that healthcare workers' safety must be treated as a national priority. The union also demanded that counties without medical cover provide it for their healthcare workers.
The union appealed to the government to make the contact tracing process transparent to provide the public with timely information. Dr. Atellah cautioned the Health Ministry against allowing misinformation to spread. The KMPDU also insisted that isolation and infectious disease treatment units across regional referral facilities must be functional, equipped, and staffed by trained personnel.
According to the Health Ministry, 28 contacts have been identified so far, along with 23 passengers and four crew members from the flight. The ministry has started the contact tracing process to prevent further spread of the virus. The KMPDU will continue to monitor the situation and engage with relevant authorities to ensure necessary safeguards are implemented.
The union also emphasized the importance of meaningful representation of healthcare workers and their unions in national and county emergency response structures. As frontline workers, they understand the gaps within the health system and can provide valuable insights. The KMPDU vowed to continue pushing for the necessary measures to protect healthcare workers and prevent the spread of the virus.
