Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has urged leaders in the Mt. Kenya region to put aside their political differences and unite, as called for by elders in the region. Speaking in Nyeri County, Kindiki stated that he has received clear orders from the elders to ensure the region remains united, despite some politicians' attempts to divide it along party lines. He emphasized that the region's unity is crucial and should be preserved for future generations.
Kindiki, who was recently endorsed by elders from various communities in the region as their spokesperson, reiterated that Mt. Kenya is one and cannot be divided into East and West. He cited the region's history, noting that it has always been united under the leadership of former Presidents Jomo Kenyatta, Mwai Kibaki, and Uhuru Kenyatta. Kindiki promised to work towards ensuring peaceful political contests, allowing aspirants to sell their agendas and voters to decide who to support.
The Deputy President highlighted the various development projects currently underway in the region, including the construction of 775 kilometres of roads in Nyeri County, valued at Ksh. 45 billion. He also mentioned the ongoing construction of modern markets and the Ruringu Stadium in Nyeri Town. Additionally, Kindiki noted that 32,000 homes in the county have benefited from last-mile electricity connections, with another 12,000 set to be connected following an additional allocation of Ksh. 650 million.
Kindiki emphasized that his focus is on developing every part of the country and improving the lives of its people. He stated that he has heeded the elders' request not to engage in insults but to be a unifying voice, looking after the welfare of the region and the whole country. The Deputy President also announced plans to convene a meeting with senior police officers to ramp up the fight against illicit alcohol and drugs in the region.
Leaders who accompanied Kindiki on his visit expressed their support for the government's development initiatives in the region. Kieni MP Njoroge Wainaina and Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi stated that they will back the government, citing the benefits that the people have derived from the development projects. They also pledged to return the favour to the Deputy President at the right time.
The visit by Kindiki was attended by several leaders, including Energy Cabinet Secretary Alex Wachira and Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga. The Deputy President's efforts to unite the Mt.
