Kilombero Sugar Company Limited has made a significant donation of four tonnes of sugar to support a free bread initiative in Kilombero District. The donation, which was handed over on October 28, 2026, will benefit more than 1,500 vulnerable people across the district. This initiative is part of the company's three-year partnership with the Franciscan Sisters of Charity through Upendo Sisters' Bakery.

The partnership between Kilombero Sugar and the Franciscan Sisters of Charity is aimed at improving the well-being of vulnerable groups in the community. The company's Communication and Stakeholder Relations Manager, Mr Victor Byemelwa, stated that the partnership supports community-led efforts to improve people's well-being. He emphasized that the company is committed to supporting initiatives that provide practical assistance to vulnerable groups.

The free bread initiative, launched in 2001, provides free bread and breakfast to vulnerable people in the district. The programme serves more than 25 institutions and community units, including orphanages, schools, and hospitals, supporting children, adolescents, patients, and other people in need. Sister Raymunda Mgaya, representing the initiative, thanked Kilombero Sugar for helping sustain bread production and distribution to vulnerable members of the community.

Kilombero District Commissioner Dunstan Kyobya commended Kilombero Sugar for its contribution, urging other stakeholders to support sustainable initiatives addressing community needs. He noted that Kilombero Sugar had contributed 10 tonnes of sugar since the partnership began in November 2025, against its three-year pledge of 23 tonnes. The commissioner called upon other stakeholders to emulate Kilombero Sugar by investing in sustainable initiatives that support vulnerable communities.

Under the agreement, Kilombero Sugar pledged to donate six tonnes of sugar in the 2025/26 financial year, eight tonnes in 2026/27, and nine tonnes in 2027/28. The latest donation forms part of the company's broader commitment to supporting community development initiatives in areas where it operates. This commitment is part of the company's corporate social responsibility efforts.

The free bread initiative has been facing increased demand for its services over the years, making continued support from partners essential. Sister Raymunda Mgaya emphasized that the initiative relies on donations to sustain its operations. Kilombero Sugar's donation will help the initiative continue providing essential services to vulnerable groups in the community.

The company's contribution marks Phase I of its commitment for the 2026/27 financial year, with a further donation expected in the second phase next year. Kilombero Sugar's partnership with the Franciscan Sisters of Charity demonstrates its commitment to supporting community development initiatives and improving the well-being of vulnerable groups.
