Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has promised to prioritize the security of Nigerians if elected president in 2027. During a campaign rally in Bayelsa State, Obi vowed to go into forests on rescue missions to free kidnapped victims. He declared that his administration would not tolerate kidnapping and insecurity, and would work to make the country safe for Nigerians to travel and engage in daily activities without fear.
Obi cited his recent road trips across several states as evidence of the urgent need to improve security on the country’s highways. He recounted traveling from Enugu to Bayelsa by road, and visiting Lokoja, Akwanga, Ebonyi, and Bayelsa in the days leading up to the rally. The former Anambra State governor emphasized that the country’s roads must be secured to ensure the safety of citizens. He also criticized President Bola Tinubu for not visiting Bayelsa State despite its significant contribution to the country’s economy through oil production.
The NDC presidential candidate questioned President Tinubu’s frequent foreign trips, arguing that he should prioritize engagement with Nigerians across the country. Obi expressed disappointment that Tinubu had traveled out of the country for over 200 days but had not visited Bayelsa State. He described this as a neglect of the state and its people, and urged citizens to consider this when making their voting decisions.
On the security situation, Obi pledged that an NDC-led government would take decisive action against kidnappers, particularly those targeting schoolchildren and other vulnerable Nigerians. He promised that his administration would work to rescue kidnapped victims and bring perpetrators to justice. Obi emphasized that nobody would be kidnapped or harm under an NDC government.
Obi also promised to tackle corruption, insisting that public funds would be managed transparently and deployed for the benefit of citizens. He vowed that an NDC government would prioritize education, electricity, and other essential services. The presidential candidate emphasized that basic education would be free through collaboration with state governments, and that his administration would work to ensure that public money was used for public good.
The NDC presidential candidate outlined his plans for electricity development, promising to produce, transmit, and distribute at least 10,000 megawatts of electricity. He compared this to the current situation under the All Progressives Congress (APC), which he claimed had only achieved 4,000 megawatts. Obi expressed confidence that his administration could achieve this goal and improve the lives of Nigerians.
The national leader of the NDC, Senator Seriake Dickson, urged Nigerians to participate actively in the 2027 general elections and defend their votes. He emphasized that the party was prepared to offer Nigerians an alternative ahead of the polls. Dickson’s comments were made during the same campaign rally where Obi made his promises on security, corruption, and development.
