A naming dispute has erupted within Kenya's opposition ranks after the Azimio la Umoja One-Kenya coalition rebranded itself as The Ukombozi Alliance. This move effectively blocks a parallel attempt by allies of Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna to adopt a near-identical identity for a separate party. The rebrand was unveiled at a gathering attended by Siaya governor James Orengo and Suba South MP Caroli Omondi, both linked to Sifuna's political circle.
The conflict centres on the United Democratic Party, formerly associated with the late Cyrus Jirongo. Trans Nzoia governor George Natembeya, a close associate of Sifuna, had been spearheading efforts to rename UDP as Ukombozi People's Party. A law firm associated with Kalonzo's camp wrote to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties on August 10, formally objecting to the proposed rebrand. Registrar John Cox Lorionokou confirmed that his office had neither approved nor authorised UDP to operate under the Ukombozi People's Party name.
The dispute surfaces at a sensitive moment for the opposition as it restructures ahead of the 2027 General Election. Former president Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to chair a Jubilee National Executive Council meeting, after which he is anticipated to begin relinquishing his positions within the party. His exit from Jubilee leadership is expected to trigger a broader leadership transition within The Ukombozi Alliance as well.
Officials familiar with the process said the transition would begin at Jubilee before formally extending to the wider coalition. The uncertainty over which party Sifuna will use has also cast doubt on plans for the Linda Mwananchi movement's launch, currently anticipated for October 3. Those involved say no final decision on a party vehicle has been reached.
In other news, Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni revealed that he was unaware that former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo died until recently. Jirongo passed away in a road accident on December 13, 2025. Museveni disclosed that Jirongo was the person who brought to his attention in 2019 that Uganda was purchasing oil from Kenya through brokers who were charging inflated prices.
A woman, Jacinta Mutiso, was arrested on Saturday evening for allegedly stabbing her boyfriend's female companion and burning her clothes inside a military housing compound at Lang'ata Barracks in Nairobi. Mutiso was identified as Senior Sergeant Patrick Musembi's girlfriend, who had used a spare key to let herself into his home and discovered women's clothing that did not belong to her.
In a separate security incident, suspected Al Shabaab militants attempted to ambush Kenya Defence Forces soldiers providing security along the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia-Transport corridor in Bura East, Garissa County. Troops from Unit 165 KDF and Unit 181 KDF repulsed the assault, forcing the insurgents to scatter in multiple directions.
