On Thursday, October 9, Bumula MP Jack Wamboka physically intervened as police officers arrested youths near a public road in Bungoma County. The arrested youths had been chanting slogans in support of The Equitable Party leader Edwin Sifuna, who recently declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election. Wamboka accused police officers of being deployed to suppress citizens exercising their democratic rights.
Video footage shared by Wamboka on his social media account shows the MP in a tense standoff with uniformed police and military personnel near a Shell petrol station along a public road. Wamboka can be heard challenging the officers directly as he moved to release some of the detained youths who had been bundled towards a police vehicle. He questioned the officers' actions, asking what they were doing and why they were harassing people.
The youths at the centre of the incident had been allegedly chanting "Sisi Ndio Sifuna" and "Wantam," phrases associated with Edwin Sifuna. Wamboka described the arrests as a politically motivated crackdown on citizens expressing constitutionally protected views in opposition to President William Ruto's administration. Audible crying from some of the youths is captured in the footage as police officers forcibly moved to detain them.
Speaking after the incident, Wamboka was unequivocal in his criticism of the security forces' actions, saying the arrests amounted to an abuse of state power. He stated that police officers should not be used to fight political wars and arrest citizens for expressing their democratic rights. Wamboka added that he had personally confronted the officers involved.
The incident occurred on the same day Wamboka had been officiating an educational function at Miluki Primary School, where he opened new classrooms and launched Success Cards for Grade 6, Grade 9, and KCSE candidates. This event was part of Wamboka's activities as an MP, focusing on education and community development.
Elsewhere, Bishop David Kodia commented on the situation within the ODM party, warning that divisions threaten the party's future. He mentioned that former premier Raila Odinga would not have allowed members to take parts of the party and form new movements. Kodia urged Kenyans not to support further fragmentations and called on the clergy to pray for the country's sanity ahead of the polls.
The confrontation between Wamboka and the police has raised concerns about the use of state power to suppress political dissent. The incident highlights the tensions within Kenya's political landscape as the 2027 election approaches. Key issues include the limits of police power and the protection of citizens' rights to express their political views.
