Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) has introduced a vehicle freight service on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), connecting Mombasa and Nairobi, with further links to Naivasha. The service was launched at the Nairobi Inland Container Depot, marking a significant milestone in vehicle transport in Kenya. KRC Managing Director Philip Mainga highlighted that the corporation has been conducting trials since last year to perfect the service.

The inaugural consignment was transported in collaboration with vehicle dealer Autobarn East Africa. Mainga expressed enthusiasm for the new service, stating it represents a new chapter in railway business in Kenya. He invited importers, clearing agents, and other motor vehicle trade players to utilize the service. The specialized freight wagons can carry six cars each, offering a safe, efficient, and cost-effective alternative to road transport.

Autobarn East Africa plans to transport approximately 700 vehicles monthly from Mombasa to Nairobi using the SGR service. Mainga emphasized that the service reduces transit time from over a day by road to about eight hours by rail. Additionally, vehicles arrive in good condition, free from dirt or dents associated with road transport. This efficiency is expected to benefit dealers, importers, distributors, and businesses moving vehicles in bulk.

The vehicle freight service is also open to holidaymakers traveling between Nairobi, Naivasha, and Mombasa. Travelers can have their personal vehicles transported by SGR, collect them upon arrival, and use the same service for the return trip. Mainga noted that this option will help reduce fatigue-related road accidents by encouraging motorists to avoid long-distance driving.

The SGR vehicle freight service aims to decrease the number of vehicles on long-distance road journeys, promoting a safer and more efficient transportation method. By utilizing rail transport, customers can minimize the risks associated with road travel, such as accidents and vehicle damage. This service is part of Kenya Railways' efforts to expand its freight services and increase efficiency in the transportation sector.

Kenya Railways Corporation is keen on increasing its market share in the freight transport sector. The introduction of the vehicle freight service on the SGR is a strategic move to attract more clients and provide a reliable alternative to road transport. The corporation is optimistic that the service will be well-received by the market and contribute to the growth of the railway industry in Kenya.

The launch of the SGR vehicle freight service is a significant development in Kenya's transportation sector. With its efficient and cost-effective services, Kenya Railways Corporation is poised to make a substantial impact on the vehicle transport market. As the service begins operations, stakeholders will be watching closely to assess its impact on the industry and the economy as a whole.
