Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has announced planned power interruptions across five counties on Thursday, October 15, 2026. The outages will affect various residential and commercial areas, with the utility firm citing routine maintenance and upgrades on its distribution network as the reason. According to KPLC, such interruptions are periodically necessary to facilitate maintenance and upgrading of power lines, connection of new customers, and replacement of infrastructure during road construction works.
In Nairobi, three separate zones are scheduled for outages from 8am to 5pm. The areas affected include Kasarani, where residents and businesses such as Warren Concrete, Shrink Park, Haco, and part of Muirigo will experience power outages. Other areas in Nairobi include part of Westlands, where locations such as Kipkabus Rd, Stima Sacco, and Mushembi Rd will be affected, and Tassia, where the whole of Kwa Ndege Area, Makuti, and Riverbank Tassia will experience outages.
The outages will also affect areas in Kiambu, including Sasini and Tinganga, which will experience power interruptions from 9am to 5pm. The affected areas in Kiambu include Sasini, Tinganga Mkt, Tinganga Sec & Pri, Ngemwa, and Kangongo. In Kitui, areas such as Kaliku, Malalani, and Endau will experience outages from 8am to 5pm, affecting locations such as Kisalu, Kamanyu, and Makongo.
Nyeri County will also experience power outages in areas such as Aaa Growers, Kiamuiru, Githiru, and Satima. The outages in these areas will take place from 9am to 5pm and affect locations such as Mugwathi Gardens, Kiamuiru Pri, and Githiru Polytechnic. In Kajiado County, areas such as Oloolua and Kajiado will experience power interruptions from 9am to 5pm, affecting locations such as Mathare, Rapha, and Ukombozi.
Kenya Power has assured that the outages are part of its efforts to maintain and upgrade its distribution network. The company has advised residents and businesses to plan accordingly and minimize disruptions. The outages will run from as early as 8am to 5pm across all affected areas and their neighborhoods.
In other news, Nigeria's Aliko Dangote has proposed selling Kenya 500MW of electricity from a planned power plant at his Lamu refinery. Kenya Power is at the center of talks, but key terms of a potential power purchase agreement remain unresolved. The plant's proposed 1,000MW capacity is double the original plan, with half the electricity intended for sale to Kenya.
The Lamu refinery project is expected to create about 60,000 jobs and serve markets across East and Central Africa. Kenya Power and Lighting Company continues to work on its distribution network to ensure reliable power supply to its customers. Residents and businesses in the affected areas are advised to check the company's website or social media for updates on the outages.
