Kenya Power has announced a planned power interruption affecting several areas in five counties, including Nairobi and Nyeri, scheduled for Monday, October 5, 2026. The utility issued the notice on Sunday evening, informing customers that supply would be cut off under Rule 27 of the Electric Power Rules, which permits scheduled interruptions to allow for network maintenance and upgrades. This move aims to improve grid reliability and expand access to electricity.
The outage is set to begin at 8:30 am and is expected to conclude by 5:00 pm. Kenya Power listed specific locations across five counties that will be affected by the maintenance exercise. Nairobi and Nyeri are among those named. Customers in the affected areas are advised to plan accordingly for the duration of the interruption, particularly those who rely on electricity for business operations or medical equipment.
In Nairobi County, areas such as Kosovo and part of Kitsuru will experience power interruptions. Specifically, Kosovo will be affected from 9 am to 5 pm, impacting Shofco, Utalii, and adjacent customers. Part of Kitsuru will also be affected during the same hours, with Gachie, Nyari West, Redhill Road, Rosslyn Green Crescent, Trio, Rosslyn Academy, and adjacent customers experiencing outages.
The maintenance exercise will also impact Kericho County, where Greenview Hospital, Green Square Mall, TRF, Kaisugu T/Fact, Mau Tea, Chepsir Market, Brooke Wood, Kapkiam Mkt, Buchenge Market, Kaboloin Market, and adjacent customers will experience power interruptions from 9 am to 5 pm. Additionally, areas in Uasin Gishu, including Kong'nyalil, Kaplolo, and Uswo Village, will be affected from 12 pm to 3 pm.
Nyeri County's Goodwood Properties and adjacent customers will experience a power interruption from 9 am to 5 pm. In Embu County, areas such as Makutano, Rukuriri Tea Factory, and Kanja will be affected from 8:30 am to 5 pm. The impacted areas include Makutano, Mufu, Njeruri, St Mary Goretti Girls, Kanja, Mukuuri, Mbuinjeru, Kiaragana Primary, Munyuttu, and adjacent customers.
Kenya Power regularly carries out such scheduled maintenance works across the country as part of its mandate to improve grid reliability and expand access to electricity. The utility cited the need to maintain and upgrade power lines, connect new customers, and support road construction works as reasons for the interruption.
Meanwhile, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has warned against illegal solar connections. The authority stated that dumping excess solar power to the Kenya Power grid without an approved net-metering agreement is prohibited, as it can destabilize grid frequency and voltage. Solar owners can export surplus electricity legally, but only after signing a formal agreement with the utility.
