Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has announced planned electricity interruptions across eight counties scheduled for Wednesday, September 30, 2026. The outages will affect residents and businesses in Nairobi, Kisumu, Embu, Kakamega, Homa Bay, Migori, Nyeri, and Kitui counties. KPLC cited routine network work as the reason for the scheduled outages, invoking Rule 27 of the Electric Power Rules as the legal basis for the interruptions.
The utility firm said the shutdowns serve multiple operational purposes, including upgrading existing infrastructure, bringing new customers onto the grid, and supporting ongoing road construction projects that require power line replacement. KPLC stated that it is necessary to interrupt supply periodically to facilitate maintenance and upgrade of power lines to the network; to connect new customers or to replace power lines during road construction.
The planned outages will commence at different times in various areas, with some facing interruptions of up to eight hours. In the Kakamega Area, Khayega will experience outages from 8:30 am to 5 pm, affecting Iguhu Hospital, Khayega, Makhokho Secondary School, Shishesia, Ivonda, and Shirere. In Kisumu, Tido will face outages from 9:30 am to 5 pm, impacting Tido Primary School, Mbeme Primary School, Ooko Market, Kolewe, and Rarieda.
Nairobi will experience outages in several areas, including Riverside Drive, Mzima Springs, from 9 am to 5 pm, affecting Part of Riverside Drive, Riverside Gardens, Mzima Springs Road, and other locations. Another area in Nairobi, Mombasa Road, will face outages from 9 am to 5 pm, impacting REREC Offices, Nice & Lovely, Manchester Knight, and other businesses. Serena Hotel, St. Andrews, will also experience outages from 9 am to 5 pm.
Other counties affected by the outages include Homa Bay, where Yala Kotieno will face interruptions from 9 am to 5 pm, impacting Yala Kotieno Secondary School, Kalanding Secondary School, and other locations. In Migori, Kehancha, Ntimaru will experience outages from 8:30 am to 5 pm, affecting the whole of Kehancha Town, Kegonga, Ntimaru, and other areas.
Nyeri, Kitui, and Embu counties will also be affected by the planned outages. In Nyeri, Miiri, Kiangai will face interruptions from 8:30 am to 5 pm, impacting Miiri Market, Miiri Kiawaiguru, Kiangai, and other locations. Kitui's Kangweni, Nzangathi, Kanzauwu will experience outages from 9 am to 5 pm, while Embu's Gachoka, Meka, Muraru, Rwika will face outages from 8 am to 5 pm.
Customers in the affected regions are advised to make alternative arrangements for power supply during the maintenance window. Businesses reliant on continuous electricity supply, including those in manufacturing, healthcare, and hospitality, are among those most likely to feel the impact of interruptions lasting up to eight hours.
