Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has announced planned outages affecting seven counties as early as 8am on Tuesday, October 6. The outages are necessary for facilitating maintenance and upgrades to the power network, connecting new customers, and replacing power lines. KPLC issued the notice under Rule 27 of the Electric Power Rules, stating that supply interruptions are carried out periodically.

The affected areas face outages until 5pm, while some areas like Simba Quarry, Pan Paper, and Mbacho are scheduled for a shorter interruption from 11am to 2:30pm. KPLC urged customers and businesses in all affected regions to make necessary arrangements ahead of the maintenance exercise. The areas affected include Taita Taveta, Kiambu, Munene, Tharaka Nithi, Kagutu, Nairobi, and Narok.

In Taita Taveta, areas such as Josa, Dembwa, and Kishamba will experience outages from 9am to 5pm. In Kiambu, areas like Wangige, Gathiga, Njonjo Farm, Wangige Hospital, and Wangige Market will be affected. Additionally, Munene Industrial area, including Bidco, Toyota Kenya, Munene Industries, and Bhuco Factory, will experience power cuts.

Tharaka Nithi areas like Kiini, Giampapo, Mugona Secondary School, Giampapo Primary School, and PCEA Kiini Primary School will face outages from 9am to 5pm. Kagutu areas, including Kaguntu, Kaanwa Market, Chuka Vocational Technical, and Mwanjate Market, will experience power cuts from 8:30am to 5pm.

Nairobi areas along Mombasa Road, including Alpha Centre, REREC Offices, and Total Petrol Station, will face outages from 9am to 5pm. Other areas like Part of Kitsuru, Rosslyn Lone Tree, and Ruaka Rd, will also be affected. Marurui areas, including Windsor Hotel, Windsor Park, and Braeburn School, will experience power cuts.

Narok areas like Narosora, Loita, Narosora Mkt, and Erangata Enteriti Mkt will face outages from 9am to 5pm. Uasin Gishu areas like Simba Quarry, Pan Paper, and Mbacho will experience a shorter power cut from 11am to 2:30pm. Kisumu areas like Angira Village, Angira Secondary School, and Angira Primary School will face outages from 8am to 5pm.

The maintenance exercise is part of KPLC's efforts to maintain and upgrade the power network. In a separate development, businessman Aliko Dangote proposed selling 500MW of electricity to Kenya from a planned power plant linked to his Lamu refinery project. However, key terms, including pricing and gas supply, have not been finalised.
