The launch of the hub coincided with the graduation of Certified Professional Mediators trained under the Jukwaa la Wasomi Mediation and Preventive Security Training Programme.
The launch of the National Mediation Hub is significant as Kenya approaches the 2027 General Election. Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen noted that political emotions were likely to rise in learning institutions as students express different political views. He urged the trained mediators to identify situations where students may be manipulated by political actors and help prevent students from being exploited.
Murkomen also announced a framework that will give student leaders and academic administrators a formal role in security decision-making. This framework aims to bring student leaders and academic administrators directly into security and intelligence committees, ensuring that the voice of students is heard in decisions about their safety. The government plans to institutionalize Jukwaa la Wasomi within two weeks.
Principal Secretary for Higher Education and Research Dr. Beatrice Inyangala emphasized the need to address the challenges facing young people. She cited research indicating that 90% of students had experienced violence either as perpetrators or victims, with women accounting for 65% and men 35% of those affected. The Jukwaa la Wasomi programme aims to promote nationalism and remind students to prioritize national interests.
The Jukwaa la Wasomi programme is a government-led initiative implemented across learning institutions through the Universities and Colleges Students' Peace Association of Kenya (UCSPAK) in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior and National Administration. Its partners include the Executive Office of the President, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health, the Judiciary, and other government ministries, departments, and agencies.
