The Kenyan Ministry of Health has announced a one-month extension for healthcare facilities to migrate to the Health Management Information Systems (HMIS). This decision comes after healthcare providers requested more time to complete the transition. The new deadline is November 30, 2026. Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale emphasized the importance of meeting this deadline to avoid service disruptions.

According to the Ministry of Health, a significant number of public healthcare facilities have already migrated to the new system. All 6,427 public Level 2 to 4 facilities have successfully transitioned, and 22 out of 28 public Level 5 facilities have completed the process, representing a 79% success rate. However, faith-based and private facilities are facing challenges in migrating to the new system.

Faith-based facilities are currently at 37% migration rate, with 190 out of 518 facilities having transitioned. The Ministry of Health also reported that 371 private healthcare facilities have migrated, although the total number of private facilities expected to make the transition was not disclosed. The migration requires facilities to move from the SHA Provider Portal to systems certified by the Digital Health Agency (DHA).

The Digital Health Agency is providing technical assistance to facilities, including system onboarding, integration, troubleshooting, user training, and coordination with HMIS vendors. This support aims to ensure a smooth transition to the new system. Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale urged facilities that have not yet migrated to complete the process within the extended period.

Failure to migrate by the deadline may result in disruptions to service verification, pre-authorization, and claims submission and processing. The Ministry of Health emphasized that access to the SHA Provider Portal will be deactivated effective November 30, 2026. Facilities that do not migrate may risk facing service disruptions and impacting healthcare services for Social Health Authority (SHA) beneficiaries.

The Social Health Authority has clarified that claims already submitted through the Provider Portal will continue to be processed in accordance with the applicable requirements. This assurance aims to minimize disruptions to healthcare services. The extension and ongoing support are expected to help facilities complete the migration process.

The Ministry of Health is working to ensure a seamless transition to the new health management system. With the deadline extended, healthcare facilities are urged to take advantage of the additional time to complete the migration process. The successful transition to HMIS is expected to improve healthcare services and management in Kenya.
