The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a temporary partial closure of a section of Waiyaki Way, also known as A8 Road. The closure affects the Mombasa-bound lanes between Kempinski and Museum Hill Interchange. According to the notice, the section will be partially closed from Thursday, October 8, 2026, to Saturday, November 7, 2026. This closure is to allow for highway maintenance works on the road section.
Motorists have been advised to follow a proposed traffic management plan and cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site. They are also encouraged to utilize the unclosed sections of the road and consider using alternative routes to minimize traffic disruption. The authority has assured that normal traffic operations on the road will be restored upon completion of the works. KeNHA Board Chairman Winfrida Ngumi and Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli recently conducted an inspection of capacity enhancement and beautification works along the corridor.
This is not the first time a section of Waiyaki Way has been partially closed. On July 24, 2026, KeNHA announced a partial closure of the section between GTC and Kempinski on the Mombasa-bound lanes. The closure, which lasted from July 31 to August 31, 2026, was also for highway maintenance works. During that period, motorists were advised to use the unclosed sections of the road and alternative routes to minimize disruption.
Earlier in the year, KeNHA partially closed a section of the busy highway from Karuna Close and Westlands Roundabout on the Nakuru-bound carriageway. The closure, which ran from June 25 to September 25, 2026, was to allow for extension works on an existing pedestrian footbridge and the construction of a new footbridge. These ongoing works aim to improve the road network and enhance safety for motorists.
The temporary closure of Waiyaki Way is part of KeNHA's efforts to maintain and upgrade the country's highway network. Motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and allow for extra time to reach their destinations. The authority has urged road users to exercise caution and follow traffic guidelines during the closure period.
KeNHA has been undertaking various projects to enhance the road network in Kenya. These projects include capacity enhancement and beautification works along major highways. The authority has also been working to improve traffic management and reduce congestion on busy roads. By undertaking regular maintenance works, KeNHA aims to ensure smooth traffic flow and enhance road safety.
In a related development, KeNHA has been engaging with stakeholders to address various issues affecting the road network. The authority has been working with traders and other stakeholders to vacate road reserves on major highways. This move aims to enhance road safety and improve traffic flow. Motorists have been advised to follow traffic guidelines and cooperate with traffic authorities during the closure period.
