The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Ghana recently celebrated its 70th anniversary with an inter-directorate games event aimed at promoting staff wellness, teamwork, and institutional cohesion. The event, held at the Paa Joe Stadium of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), featured various sports competitions, including football, volleyball, and track events. Staff from different directorates participated in the games, which formed part of the hospital's activities to commemorate seven decades of service to the nation.
The games provided an opportunity for staff to exercise and promote their physical well-being, which is essential for healthcare workers with demanding schedules. Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, Chief Executive Officer of KATH, emphasized the importance of including sporting activities in the anniversary program. He noted that healthcare workers often have limited opportunities to engage in regular physical exercise, and the initiative was part of the hospital's broader efforts to promote a healthy workforce.
Dr. Yaw Opare Larbie, Deputy Medical Director of KATH and Chairman of the 70th Anniversary Operational Committee, highlighted the significance of the games in bringing staff together from different directorates. With over 6,000 staff members, KATH has employees working in various areas who may not ordinarily interact with one another. The games encouraged staff to become more conscious of their health and adopt healthier lifestyles.
The sporting activities also provided a platform for staff to interact outside their routine work environment, fostering teamwork and cohesion. Dr. Opare Larbie expressed satisfaction with the level of participation, noting that the presence of staff and their families created an atmosphere of camaraderie and strengthened the sense of belonging among members of the hospital community.
In the football competition, Team H, comprising staff from the Supply Chain Management, Medicine, Diet Therapy, and Domestic Services directorates, emerged as winners after defeating Team A 3-0 in the final. Winners, first runners-up, and second runners-up in the various disciplines received medals in recognition of their performances.
The hospital's 70th anniversary celebrations were launched in December 2025, and activities commemorating the anniversary are continuing throughout 2026. The events aim to celebrate the hospital's seven decades of healthcare delivery and engage its staff and stakeholders. The inter-directorate games were a significant part of these celebrations, promoting staff wellness and teamwork.
The event concluded with a sense of accomplishment, as staff members looked forward to future activities celebrating the hospital's milestone anniversary. The hospital's commitment to promoting a healthy workforce and fostering teamwork among its staff was evident in the success of the inter-directorate games.
