The Kano State Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking has announced plans to rehabilitate 10,000 drug abusers and provide them with skills acquisition training. The task force's chairman, Muhuyi Rimin Gado, made the disclosure while briefing newsmen at the headquarters of the Task Force on Tuesday. The Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has provided an additional facility in Tofa Local Government Area to serve as an extension to the existing Kiru reformatory institute. This new facility will help accommodate the growing needs of the people of Kano. According to Rimin Gado, the governor's intervention was necessary due to the growing acceptance and satisfaction of the public with the operations of the Task Force.
The Kano State Reformatory Institute, Kiru, has been filled to capacity by clients seeking rehabilitation. The task force has so far referred about 125 individuals to undergo rehabilitation at the institute. Rimin Gado noted that drug abuse is a sickness that requires a healing process, and the task force is working to provide effective treatment, rehabilitation, and reintegration.
In a recent operation, the task force acted on a complaint of illegal Pentazocine administration to a 63-year-old woman by the former Chairman of Rogo Local Government, Yahuza Musa. The former chairman has since been charged before a competent court of law, and the case is ongoing. This operation demonstrates the task force's commitment to tackling drug-related crimes.
The task force is engaging industrial stakeholders to create employment, skills acquisition, and other productive opportunities for youth who have undergone rehabilitation. This move aims to ensure that the rehabilitated individuals can reintegrate into society and lead productive lives.
