The Kano State Government has successfully revived the Goron Dutse water facility, which had been inactive for approximately 30 years. This development is expected to significantly enhance the water supply capacity of Kano metropolis by adding 40 million litres of potable water. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf announced this achievement during an inspection of the facility, where he evaluated the progress of ongoing rehabilitation works on three reservoirs and pumping infrastructure.
According to Governor Yusuf, the revival of the Goron Dutse facility is a key component of his administration's efforts to address long-standing challenges in water production, treatment, storage, and distribution across Kano State. To identify facilities requiring urgent rehabilitation, the government conducted a comprehensive assessment of dams, treatment plants, pumping stations, and other water infrastructure across the state. This assessment led to the award of an N11 billion contract for major works aimed at strengthening water production, treatment, and distribution.
The rehabilitation of the Goron Dutse facility holds particular significance due to its strategic connection to the Challawa Water Works. Governor Yusuf disclosed that the works at the Challawa Water Works have been completed, and a 15.6-kilometre pipeline linking the treatment plant to the Goron Dutse reservoirs has been tested and found to be in good condition. Treated water will be conveyed from Challawa through this pipeline to the three reservoirs at Goron Dutse, where it will be stored before being pumped through the distribution network to communities across the metropolis.
The three reservoirs at Goron Dutse have a combined storage capacity of approximately 40 million litres. Governor Yusuf emphasized that the return of the Goron Dutse pumping facility to service will provide an important additional storage and distribution point for treated water in Kano metropolis. This development is expected to improve the availability and reliability of potable water supply across the state.
Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dahir Muhammad Hashim, provided further details on the rehabilitation works carried out on the three reservoirs and the associated pumping infrastructure. He stated that preparations for the commencement of water pumping were at an advanced stage. Once the remaining works are completed, the ministry will seek the governor's approval to commence the pumping of treated water from Goron Dutse into Kano metropolis.
