The Kano State Government has approved the upgrade of five Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) to General Hospitals. This decision is part of efforts to expand access to secondary healthcare services across the state. The affected facilities are located in Garun Malam, Kumbotso, Ghari, Garko, and Kachako.
According to the Kano State Hospitals Management Board, the upgrade is in line with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's administration's commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery. The goal is to bring comprehensive medical services closer to underserved communities. A statement signed by Samira Suleiman, Public Relations Officer of the Board, confirmed the development.
The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has commenced arrangements for the immediate takeover and assessment of the five facilities. A team led by the Executive Secretary of the Board, Dr Mansur Mudi Nagoda, will conduct a comprehensive assessment of the existing infrastructure, human resources, equipment, and other requirements needed for their conversion to General Hospitals.
The assessment team will identify gaps and determine additional requirements necessary for the smooth commencement of operations at the upgraded facilities. The team will submit its findings and recommendations to the state government for immediate action. This process aims to ensure a seamless transition of the PHCs to General Hospitals.
The upgrade is expected to improve access to secondary healthcare services in the benefiting local government areas. It will also reduce pressure on existing general and specialist hospitals, strengthen referral pathways, and improve healthcare delivery at the grassroots level. Residents of the affected areas are expected to benefit from the expansion of secondary healthcare services.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, and the HMB Executive Secretary expressed appreciation to Governor Yusuf for approving the upgrade. They described the decision as another milestone in the ongoing repositioning of the state's healthcare system. The Ministry of Health and the Hospitals Management Board assured residents of effective implementation of the upgrade.
Once the transition is completed, residents of Garun Malam, Kumbotso, Ghari, Garko, and Kachako will have access to timely, affordable, and quality healthcare services closer to their communities.
