Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has given approval for the implementation of promotions for 18,984 teaching and non-teaching staff of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) for January and July 2026. This move aims to boost staff morale and improve service delivery in the basic education sector. The promotions will be implemented across the state's 44 Local Government Education Authorities.

The approval follows a request by the Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Yusuf Kabir, for the release of N235,116,339.09 to implement the promotions. The funds will be used to cover corresponding salary adjustments for the affected workers. According to SUBEB, timely implementation of promotions is crucial for staff motivation, career development, capacity building, and improved service delivery.

The Kano State Government House Director General, Media and Publicity, Sunusi Tofa, issued a statement confirming the approval. The statement said the affected workers are eligible teaching and non-teaching personnel whose promotions had been processed. The government inherited outstanding promotion backlogs involving arrears of up to seven years, as well as another backlog spanning one and a half years.

Governor Yusuf's administration had previously approved and implemented outstanding promotions, which improved staff morale and restored confidence among workers. The latest intervention demonstrates the administration's commitment to the welfare and career development of public servants in the basic education sector. The approval was ratified by the Kano State Executive Council.

SUBEB stated that it has about 60,000 teaching and non-teaching personnel serving across the 44 Local Government Education Authorities, making it one of the largest public institutions in the state. The board completed the necessary processes for the 2026 promotion cycles, including verification of staff eligibility and computation of salary adjustments.

The implementation of promotions will have a positive impact on the basic education sector in Kano State. The sector has faced challenges in the past, including outstanding promotion backlogs. The current administration's efforts to address these challenges have been welcomed by stakeholders.

The approval of promotions for 18,984 SUBEB staff is part of the Kano State government's efforts to improve the welfare of public servants. The government has demonstrated its commitment to the career development and motivation of staff in the basic education sector.
