Ogun State indigenes residing in Kano have expressed their support for Hajia Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo, the Deputy Governorship Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for the 2027 election in Ogun State. The indigenes, who gathered at short notice, commended Sowunmi-Kolapo for making time to receive them and adjusting her flight schedule to accommodate their planned celebration. This gesture, they said, demonstrated her love for her people and commitment to inclusiveness in governance.
The President of the Ogun State Indigenes Association in Kano, Alhaji Lateef Faisu Alamu, welcomed the opportunity for Kano-based Ogun indigenes to interact with Sowunmi-Kolapo. Alamu, from Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, noted that the prompt adjustment of her schedule showed her dedication to engaging with her people. He emphasized that the indigenes are behind Hon. Ladi Adebutu and would support them during the elections.
The indigenes, comprising accomplished individuals such as medical doctors, lawyers, and businessmen, highlighted the critical issue of youth employment in Ogun State. They noted that many qualified graduates struggle to secure meaningful employment despite possessing the requisite education and skills. The General Secretary of Ogun Indigenes in Kano, H.O. Salami, prayed for the success of the PDP governorship ticket in Ogun State, expressing confidence in Sowunmi-Kolapo's leadership.
Imam Abdulyaqeen Olugbenga Abduljaleel, the association's former Legal Adviser, thanked Sowunmi-Kolapo for rescheduling her trip to respond to the yearnings of Ogun indigenes in Kano. He assured her of the indigenes' support for her aspirations, noting that their collective aspiration is to see Ogun State emerge as a prosperous and well-governed model for other parts of Nigeria.
Sowunmi-Kolapo responded by assuring the Kano-based indigenes that the PDP is committed to job creation and inclusive development. She described Adebutu as a compassionate leader who has consistently demonstrated concern for the welfare and development of Ogun State's people. Sowunmi-Kolapo also called for a stronger sense of ownership of Ogun's political destiny, urging the people to reject any arrangement that could undermine the state's autonomy.
The PDP deputy governorship candidate cited developments in neighbouring Osun State as evidence that voters could take control of their political destiny. She emphasized that the campaign slogan, "ITURA DE," meaning relief/comfort has come, is predicated on competence, compassion, and effective governance. Sowunmi-Kolapo urged Ogun indigenes resident in Kano and other parts of Northern Nigeria to remain actively involved in political developments in their home state.
The engagement ended with prayers for Sowunmi-Kolapo's safe return as the PDP intensifies its mobilisation and electioneering activities. The indigenes' show of support for Sowunmi-Kolapo and Adebutu demonstrates their commitment to the PDP's vision for Ogun State's future.
