Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka is set to visit Siaya county this weekend for a high-profile political engagement with Siaya Governor James Orengo. The visit comes days after the Azimio coalition adopted the Ukombozi name, rebranding as The Ukombozi Alliance (TUA). According to an itinerary, Kalonzo will attend a church service in Bondo before proceeding to Siaya town for a series of public rallies to sell the newly rebranded Ukombozi Alliance in Nyanza.
The visit will bring Orengo and Kalonzo together in the governor's political backyard as the opposition undergoes a major realignment ahead of the 2027 General Election. Kalonzo announced on Monday that the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition had unanimously agreed to rebrand as The Ukombozi Alliance. This move is seen as a fresh phase in the opposition's efforts to reorganize its political machinery.
The rebranding comes amid a brewing dispute between Kalonzo's camp and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna's Linda Mwananchi movement over the Ukombozi identity. Sifuna's allies had been pursuing Ukombozi People's Party as a possible political vehicle for Linda Mwananchi. However, the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties said it had not approved the proposed name, citing its similarity to The Ukombozi Alliance.
The dispute has effectively placed Kalonzo's Ukombozi Alliance and Sifuna's Linda Mwananchi movement on separate tracks as both sides position themselves for the 2027 contest. The Siaya governor, who has been associated with the Linda Mwananchi camp, was among the leaders who joined Kalonzo during Monday's unveiling of the new alliance.
Reports from Monday's meeting indicated a unanimous decision to have the Siaya governor replace retired President Uhuru Kenyatta as the coalition's chairman. Orengo's decision to host Kalonzo in Siaya provides an early public demonstration of his new role in the coalition. It could also offer the Wiper leader an opportunity to establish a foothold in Nyanza.
Kalonzo's visit also comes as the opposition grapples with competing political interests and the question of how the various teams will settle on a joint candidate for the 2027 General Election. According to a programme released by Wiper spokesperson Ndegwa Njiru, Kalonzo has also scheduled engagements in Kitui, Busia and Siaya this week.
On Wednesday, the former Vice President will be in Kyuso in Mwingi North constituency, Kitui county. On Thursday, Kalonzo will return to his Tseikuru residence in Kitui county, where he will lead his family in commemorating the 20th anniversary of his late mother, Mama Sarah Malia Musyoka. He will then travel to Busia county on Saturday, September 26, 2026, for a number of political activities ahead of the Bondo visit.
