Kenyan opposition leader Kalonzo Musyoka's efforts to rename and restructure the Azimio la Umoja coalition as The Ukombozi Alliance (TUA) have sparked debate among opposition leaders. Musyoka, who leads the Wiper party, aims to rebrand the coalition following the death of its former leader, Raila Odinga. The move may position Musyoka as a key contender for the presidential ticket in the 2027 elections. However, some opposition leaders are hesitant to join TUA, citing concerns about losing their party identities.
Several opposition parties have expressed reservations about joining TUA. The DCP party, led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and the Linda Mwananchi movement, associated with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, have shown reluctance to join the new coalition. Sifuna stated that his new party, The Equitable Party, is undergoing significant changes and will consider alliances in the future. This development highlights the challenges Musyoka faces in uniting the opposition.
Musyoka has urged Wiper party members who have collaborated with Sifuna to focus on party activities. He specifically mentioned Kaiti MP Joshua Kimilu and Wundanyi MP Danson Mwashako. This tension underscores the competition for grassroots support and party control as leaders seek to form alliances to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 elections.
Jeremiah Kioni, deputy leader of the Jubilee party, stated that his party is not in a hurry to join TUA. Kioni emphasized that the opposition needs new ideas, citing the losses suffered by some politicians who supported Azimio in the 2022 elections. However, leaders like Justin Muturi of the Democratic Party and Eugene Wamalwa of DAP-K have expressed support for TUA as a viable vehicle to challenge President Ruto.
The controversy surrounding TUA stems from a coalition agreement that initially seemed to guarantee the party leader a direct presidential ticket. However, Musyoka's allies claim that this provision has been revised, allowing all members to compete for the ticket. Musyoka has also downplayed concerns about the impact of former President Uhuru Kenyatta's resignation as coalition chairman on TUA's leadership.
There are efforts to persuade Gachagua to take over as chairman to attract DCP to the coalition. Siaya Governor James Orengo, associated with Linda Mwananchi, has also been mentioned as a potential candidate for the position. However, Muriu, a Gatanga MP and Gachagua ally, stated that DCP wants to consolidate its support before engaging in coalition talks.
Political analyst Prof. David Monda believes that TUA will struggle to gain sufficient support without uniting key leaders like Musyoka, Sifuna, Gachagua, and former Interior Minister Fred Matiang'i. Monda argues that these leaders must work together to challenge President Ruto and avoid risking individual losses in the 2027 elections.
