A meeting between Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and former Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu at Gachagua's Wamunyoro residence has sparked speculation about a new political alliance. The meeting has raised questions about the strategies of uniting the Mt. Kenya, Western, and Coastal regions to form a strong opposition bloc ahead of the 2027 general elections. Gachagua compared the discussions to the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) alliance that led to the removal of KANU from power in 2002.

The emerging alliance between Gachagua and Ngilu could create a new rivalry within the opposition, particularly in the stronghold of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka. Gachagua and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna's allies say they want to revive the "Mt. Kenya Alliance" strategy, which aims to unite the Mt. Kenya and Western regions. They also seek to expand their influence in the Coastal region, an area where Kalonzo has significant support through the Wiper party.

Ngilu's decision to meet with Gachagua has sparked anger within Kalonzo's camp. Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua accused Ngilu of trying to undermine Kalonzo's presidential ambitions. Wambua described Ngilu as a politician who changes positions for personal gain, claiming the Wamunyoro meeting aimed to create an alternative power centre to challenge Wiper's influence in the region.

However, Senator Dan Maanzo defended Ngilu, stating that she remains part of the opposition's consultations and that there are no hidden agendas in the meeting. Maanzo warned that no single community or two can win the presidential election alone, emphasizing that the opposition should not afford to lose any votes or candidates.

Deputy DCP leader Cleophas Malala has been advocating for an alliance between the Mt. Kenya and Mulembe communities to unite the opposition against President William Ruto. However, Gachagua has distanced himself from Malala's comments, stating that they do not represent the party's official position.

The meeting between Ngilu and Gachagua has added a new dimension to opposition talks. However, there is still no consensus on a single candidate, leadership positions, or the structure of the alliance. Analysts say the opposition's biggest challenge is to translate meetings and political statements into agreements that allow leaders with different aspirations to work together.

As the 2027 elections approach, the opposition is facing increasing pressure to present a united front. Kalonzo has warned against announcing a candidate prematurely, calling for consultations and formal party procedures to be completed. Meanwhile, Wiper leaders in the Coastal region have emphasized that Kalonzo should contest the presidency himself if he is not given the joint opposition ticket.
