Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has granted amnesty to 27 inmates in various correctional facilities across the state as part of celebrations marking Nigeria's 66th independence anniversary. This move brings the total number of individuals who have benefited from the governor's amnesty program since assuming office to over 500. The decision was announced by the state's Commissioner for Information and Culture, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki.

According to Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, the state government has spent over N300 million on paying fines and compensating victims of crimes since Governor Uba Sani took office in May 2023. This initiative is part of the government's efforts to ensure a fair and just system that not only punishes offenders but also provides opportunities for those who have been rehabilitated to reintegrate into society.

The state's Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Sir James A. Kanyip, noted that the governor has consistently granted amnesty on special occasions such as New Year's Day, Democracy Day, and Nigeria's Independence Day. He emphasized that the amnesty process is based on established guidelines, taking into account rehabilitation, justice, and the rights of those affected.

Sir James A. Kanyip further explained that paying fines and compensation helps alleviate financial burdens that often hinder the release of eligible inmates. He stressed that the continued implementation of this program demonstrates that amnesty is not a one-time event, but rather an integral part of the government's strategy to promote justice and rehabilitation.

The amnesty program is part of Governor Uba Sani's efforts to promote a fair and compassionate justice system. Malam Ahmed Maiyaki reiterated the government's commitment to protecting the public and respecting the rights of victims of crime, while also assisting eligible inmates to reunite with their families and communities.

The Kaduna State government has been actively working to improve the state's correctional facilities and provide support for inmates. The governor's amnesty program is seen as a key aspect of this effort, aimed at promoting rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

With this latest batch of amnesty grants, the total number of inmates released under Governor Uba Sani's program now stands at over 500. The governor's initiative has been widely welcomed by stakeholders, who see it as a positive step towards promoting justice and reducing the burden on the state's correctional facilities.
