The M'belwa District Council in Malawi has initiated the construction of the K370 million Mzalangwe Bridge, spanning the Luweya River in Mzimba Hora Constituency. This project is funded under the Reformed K5 billion Constituency Development Fund (CDF). Ngwira commended the government's commitment to developing rural areas through the reformed CDF program.
In addition to the Mzalangwe Bridge project, the council has launched a K559 million initiative to construct a staff house, latrine, and reticulated water supply system at Chaboli Extension Planning Area (EPA) in the constituency. This project aims to improve the living conditions of local residents and provide them with access to basic services. The council has contracted Chaima & Jasten Construction to undertake the works at Chaboli EPA.
M'belwa District Council chairperson Joel Nkhata has urged the contractors to adhere to quality standards and complete the projects within the stipulated timeframe. He emphasized the importance of delivering decent jobs and ensuring value for money. The district commissioner, Emmanuel Bulukutu, disclosed that both construction projects will take 90 days to complete.
The construction of the Mzalangwe Bridge and other projects has been welcomed by local community members, who have been affected by the collapse of the previous bridge in 2024. Group village head Nyambose expressed gratitude to the government for the development, citing the struggles faced by pregnant women in accessing healthcare facilities during the rainy season.
