The management of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi (JOSTUM), has successfully cleared backlogs in staff promotion, achieving a significant milestone in its academic development. Between 2018 and 2025, the university recorded a total of 204 professorial promotions. This accomplishment underscores the institution's commitment to enhancing the career progression of its academic staff. The vice chancellor, Prof. Isaac Itodo, emphasized that addressing the backlog of staff promotions was a priority upon assuming office in 2023.

According to Prof. Itodo, the development of academic staff is critical to strengthening teaching, research, supervision, and mentorship, as well as the institution's overall competitiveness. He noted that a university cannot compete effectively at national and international levels without a strong community of professors to provide academic leadership and drive research and innovation. Professors play key roles in mentoring younger academics, strengthening teaching and supervision, leading research programs, attracting research collaborations, and enhancing the institution's intellectual reputation and visibility.

The breakdown of professorial promotions between 2018 and 2025 reveals 76 promotions involving Associate Professors and Professors were recorded between 2018 and 2021. In 2022, 43 cases were recorded, while 24 cases were processed in 2023. The number rose to 55 in 2024, then fell to 6 in 2025. These figures demonstrate the university's efforts to address the accumulated promotion cases over several years. Additionally, 29 cases from 2026 are currently undergoing the prima facie process, bringing the overall number of professorial promotion cases to 233.

Prof. Itodo stressed that promotion should not be viewed merely as an elevation in title but as recognition of sustained contributions to the university. He emphasized that promotion is about recognizing years of commitment to teaching, research, supervision, mentorship, and service to the university. This approach encourages greater commitment and productivity among academic staff, aiming to enhance the institution's growth and global visibility.

The vice chancellor reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that eligible staff are not subjected to unnecessary delays in their career progression. He stated that when staff grow, JOSTUM grows, and when academics excel, the institution gains greater capacity to compete nationally and internationally. This commitment is expected to foster a more productive and competitive academic environment at JOSTUM.

The clearing of promotion backlogs and the ongoing processing of new cases reflect JOSTUM's dedication to academic excellence and staff development. By prioritizing career progression and recognizing the contributions of its academic staff, the university aims to strengthen its position in the national and international academic landscape. The institution's focus on promoting its staff is seen as a strategic move to enhance its competitiveness and reputation.

The successful clearance of promotion backlogs and the processing of additional cases demonstrate JOSTUM's commitment to creating a conducive academic environment. The university's efforts to prioritize staff development and career progression are expected to yield positive outcomes in the years to come, contributing to its growth and global visibility.
