Nigeria’s former President, Goodluck Jonathan, has expressed satisfaction with the progress made on the Azikel Refinery in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. During a visit to the site, Mr Jonathan assessed the privately funded project, which aims to produce a full range of refined petroleum products. The refinery is expected to contribute to Nigeria’s efforts to expand domestic refining capacity, strengthen energy security, and promote industrial development.

The Azikel Refinery, originally licensed in 2015, has undergone significant enhancements, including value engineering and redesign. These changes have resulted in an increased processing capacity of 25,000 barrels per day and a total investment of approximately $1 billion. The facility is designed as a full slate hydro-skimming refinery, capable of producing various petroleum products. Plans are in place to expand its capacity to 125,000 barrels per day in the future.

Mr Jonathan commended the President of Azikel Group, Eruani Azibapu, for his vision and investment in the project. He also acknowledged the contributions of the Africa Finance Corporation and the African Export-Import Bank for their financial and institutional support. The refinery is seen as a strategic industrial project aimed at transforming Bayelsa State into a major industrial hub, creating employment opportunities and stimulating economic growth.

The former president described the Azikel Refinery as a “hub of the new industrialisation” of the Niger Delta and Nigeria’s South-south region. He emphasized that projects like the Azikel Refinery and the Dangote Refinery are crucial steps towards achieving greater local content, self-reliance, and energy security in Nigeria. Such investments, he noted, demonstrate the potential of the Niger Delta to evolve into a major centre for refining, manufacturing, and industrial development.

Mr Jonathan’s visit to the refinery and his comments underscore the significance of private sector-led industrialisation in the Niger Delta. The Azikel Group’s commitment to developing industrial infrastructure in the region is expected to add value to Nigeria’s natural resources, create sustainable employment, and contribute to the country’s economic transformation. This project aligns with broader efforts to strengthen local production capacity and create opportunities for economic growth across Africa.

The Azikel Refinery project has garnered support from various stakeholders, including financial institutions and government officials. Its successful completion is anticipated to have a positive impact on Nigeria’s energy sector and economy. The project’s progress reflects a collaborative effort between private investors and financial institutions to drive industrial development in the Niger Delta.

The completion of the Azikel Refinery is expected to not only enhance Nigeria’s refining capacity but also contribute to the country’s economic diversification efforts. With its potential to create employment and stimulate growth, the project is seen as a significant development in Nigeria’s industrial landscape. The project’s impact will be closely watched as it moves towards full operational capacity.
