The Nigerian Navy Marines and Nigerian Army have launched a series of intelligence-driven offensives against terrorists in the Lake Chad region, resulting in the deaths of at least 34 insurgents. According to Naval spokesperson Abiodun Folrunsho, the operations were conducted between October 28 and 30, in collaboration with Army 403 Amphibious Brigade operatives. The joint task force, operating under Operation Hadin Kai, aims to combat terrorist activities in the North-east.

On October 28, a total of 28 terrorists suspected to be members of Boko Haram were killed in action, Mr. Folrunsho disclosed. The subsequent offensive on October 30 resulted in the deaths of an additional six terrorists at their enclave identified as Dumba. The casualty figures are subject to further verification as operational assessments continue. The joint offensives were conducted in collaboration with operatives stationed at the Naval Base Lake Chad.

Boko Haram and its rival Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) are entrenched in Lake islands, often launching attacks on security and civilian targets. They occasionally engage in infighting on boats, with videos of their clashes going viral. To counter their activities, regional security forces under the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) have integrated naval and riverine patrols to strip the insurgents of their sanctuary.

With the escalating geopolitical and structural challenges facing MNJTF, observers note that naval and riverine patrols have significantly reduced. As a result, major responsibilities have shifted to Nigerian forces, which continue to deploy air and naval assets. The Nigerian Navy Marines have served as a force multiplier under Operation Hadin Kai, strengthening the conduct of offensive operations against terrorist elements.

The operational contributions of the Nigerian Navy Marines have enhanced the capacity to target terrorist enclaves, disrupt hostile activities, and deny Boko Haram terrorists freedom of action within the Lake Chad area. These efforts support the degradation of terrorist capabilities and advance ongoing operations to restore peace and stability in the North-east.

The joint offensives have dealt a significant blow to terrorist activities in the region. However, the complexity of the Lake Chad region and the adaptability of terrorist groups mean that continued efforts are necessary to secure the area. The Nigerian Navy and Army will likely continue to play a crucial role in these operations.

The success of the joint offensives highlights the importance of inter-agency collaboration in counter-terrorism efforts. The Nigerian Navy and Army have demonstrated their capability to work together effectively, and their continued cooperation will be essential in achieving lasting peace and stability in the North-east.
