The Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) in Tanzania has launched an initiative to provide free health screenings for athletes across the country. This move aims to enhance the health and safety of athletes, particularly during significant events like the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). According to Dr. Peter Kisenge, the Executive Director of JKCI and a specialist in cardiac diseases, the institute is well-equipped with modern technology and experts to efficiently provide these services.

The JKCI has been actively involved in providing healthcare services to the public and has now shifted its focus towards athletes. The institute boasts a state-of-the-art laboratory equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) technology, enabling it to offer a range of diagnostic services. These services include heart health checks, blood sugar level tests, heart rate monitoring, and other essential health screenings. Dr. Kisenge emphasized the importance of regular health check-ups for athletes to detect potential health issues early.

Dr. Kisenge encouraged athletes to develop a culture of regular health check-ups to identify potential health challenges early and reduce the risk of sudden deaths during sports activities. Festo Yohana, a pool table player who visited JKCI for screening, expressed gratitude to the institute for offering free services to athletes. He noted that many athletes do not have a culture of regular health check-ups, despite engaging in physically demanding activities.

Yohana believes that the free health screenings will help athletes understand their health status, take prompt action if any issues are detected, and continue participating in sports safely. He advised fellow athletes to seize this opportunity to prioritize their health. Mrisho Mpoto, the ambassador of JKCI, stated that the institute's goal is to reduce heart diseases and other health issues in the country by promoting early detection and treatment.

Mpoto stressed the importance of athletes being aware of key health indicators, such as blood sugar levels, heart rate, and cholesterol levels. He noted that some athletes engage in physical activities without considering proper procedures or being aware of their health status, which can put them at risk. According to Mpoto, statistics show that a significant number of people are unaware of their health status.

Mpoto encouraged citizens, including athletes, to take advantage of the free health screenings and medical services offered by JKCI. He emphasized that this initiative aims to build a culture of early health detection and encourage people to take necessary actions before health issues become severe. The JKCI's efforts are expected to have a positive impact on the health and well-being of Tanzanian athletes.

The free health screenings and medical services offered by JKCI are a significant step towards promoting the health and safety of athletes in Tanzania. By taking advantage of these services, athletes can ensure they are physically prepared for their respective sports and reduce the risk of health-related issues. The initiative also highlights the importance of prioritizing health and well-being in the athletic community.
