The Federal University Dutse in Jigawa State has received approval from the National Universities Commission for 30 new academic programmes. This development was announced in a statement by the Acting Director, Public Affairs, Federal University Dutse, Abdullahi Yahaya, on Tuesday in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital. The approval was contained in a letter dated 11th September, 2026, with reference number NUC/AP/F33/VOL.II/15.
According to Yahaya, the commission approved the Faculty of Law to commence academic activities and granted full-time mode for the 30 programmes beginning from the 2026/2027 academic session. Some of the approved undergraduate programmes include B.Sc. Artificial Intelligence, B.Sc. Data Science, B.Sc. Information Systems and L.L.B. Common and Islamic Law. These new programmes are expected to enhance the university's academic offerings.
The approved programmes also include B.Sc. Ed. Physics, Biology, Mathematics, B.Ed. Educational Management, Early Childhood and Adult Education. Additionally, health-related programmes such as B.Sc. Community Health, Medical Laboratory Science, Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Physiotherapy, Radiography and Optometry have been approved. These programmes are designed to meet the evolving educational needs of society.
Other approved programmes are B.Sc. Parasitology and Entomology, Environmental Standards, Water Sanitation and Hygiene, Applied Geology and Remote Sensing and B.A. Ed. Arabic and English. The university also secured approval for Science Laboratory Technology with options in Biology and Biochemistry Technology. These new programmes will provide students with a wide range of academic choices.
Postgraduate programmes approved include PGD, M.Sc. and PhD in Forestry and Wildlife, Accounting, Treasury and Finance, Banking and Finance and Information Technology. Additionally, Masters in Banking and Finance and Masters in Accounting and Finance were also approved. This expansion of postgraduate programmes will enhance the university's research and academic capabilities.
The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Dutse, Prof. Ahmad Gumel, welcomed the development, saying it marked an important step forward in his initiative to mount new academic programmes. Gumel stated that the new programmes are specifically designed to address the evolving educational needs of society, focusing on critical areas such as technology, science education and health-related disciplines.
Gumel emphasized that the strategic academic growth aims to equip students with relevant skills and knowledge that align with current industry demands and societal challenges. This will ensure that FUD graduates are well-prepared for the workforce. The university's commitment to providing quality education and meeting industry needs is evident in its efforts to expand its academic programmes.
