The Federal University Dutse, Jigawa State, has taken disciplinary action against 22 students for various offences, including cultism, armed robbery, and drug abuse. According to the Acting Director of Public Affairs, Abdullahi Yahya, 12 students were expelled with immediate effect, while five others were rusticated and five issued warning letters. The sanctions were approved by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ahmad Mohammad Gumel, after reviewing the report from the 20th meeting of the Students' Disciplinary Committee.
The expelled students were found guilty of involvement in criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, cult-related activities, and drug abuse on campus. The list of expelled students includes Emmanuel Nebani Anenechukwu, Ayomide Kayode Peter, Idris Ismail, Miracle Kayode Pelumi, Yazi Yusuf Saleh, and Ahmed Bashir, among others. The offences committed by the students included criminal conspiracy and armed robbery, phone theft, robbery, and cult-related activities.
In addition to the expelled students, five others were rusticated for offences bordering on attempted sexual assault and cyberbullying. Four of the affected students were rusticated for two semesters, while one was rusticated for one semester. The rustication was due to their involvement in cyberbullying and sexual assault-related offences. The university management emphasized that it would not condone any act of indiscipline that tarnishes the image of the institution.
The university also issued warning letters to five students for cyberbullying, attempted sexual assault, and drug abuse off-campus. Those warned include Abubakar Mukhtar, Rabia Batagarawa Ibrahim, Oladimeji Olubenga Samson, Saratu Samaila, and Mubarak Ajagunna Adeshina. The university management warned that it has zero tolerance for criminality, cultism, drug abuse, and harassment of any form.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ahmad Mohammad Gumel, had directed that the sanctions take immediate effect and urged students to remain law-abiding. The university remains committed to providing a safe and conducive environment for learning and character development. The Acting Director of Public Affairs, Abdullahi Yahya, urged parents and guardians to counsel their wards to shun vices capable of truncating their academic careers.
The Federal University Dutse had earlier sought the support of the Jigawa State Police Command to tackle emerging cult-related activities and other anti-social behaviours among some of its students. The appeal was made during a courtesy visit by the Vice-Chancellor, Senate, management, and staff of the university to the newly posted Commissioner of Police, CP Tijjani Murtala, at the command headquarters in Dutse.
