The Federal University Dutse in Jigawa State has received approval from the National Universities Commission for 30 new academic programmes. This development was announced by the Acting Director of Public Affairs, Abdullahi Yahaya, in a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital. The approval was contained in a letter dated September 11, 2026, with reference number NUC/AP/F33/VOL.II/15.
The approved programmes include Artificial Intelligence, Law, Data Science, Medical Laboratory Science, and Community Health. According to Yahaya, the commission granted full-time mode for the 30 programmes beginning from the 2026/2027 academic session. The Faculty of Law has also been approved to commence academic activities. Some of the approved undergraduate programmes include B.Sc. Artificial Intelligence, B.Sc. Data Science, B.Sc. Information Systems, and L.L.B. Common and Islamic Law.
Other approved undergraduate programmes are B.Sc. Ed. Physics, Biology, Mathematics, B.Ed. Educational Management, Early Childhood and Adult Education. The university also secured approval for health-related programmes such as B.Sc. Community Health, Medical Laboratory Science, Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Physiotherapy, Radiography, and Optometry. Additionally, programmes like B.Sc. Parasitology and Entomology, Environmental Standards, Water Sanitation and Hygiene, Applied Geology, and Remote Sensing were approved.
The university also received approval for postgraduate programmes, including PGD, M.Sc., and PhD in Forestry and Wildlife, Accounting, Treasury and Finance, Banking and Finance, and Information Technology. Furthermore, Masters in Banking and Finance and Masters in Accounting and Finance were also approved. This development is expected to enhance the university's academic offerings and provide students with a wider range of choices.
Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ahmad Gumel, expressed his delight at the development, stating that it marks an important step forward in his initiative to mount new academic programmes. Gumel noted that the new programmes are designed to address the evolving educational needs of society, focusing on critical areas such as technology, science education, and health-related disciplines.
