Kenyan airline Jambojet has confirmed it is working closely with health authorities to support the public health response after a passenger on one of its flights was diagnosed with Ebola. The passenger traveled on flight JM 8523 from Entebbe to Nairobi on October 3. Jambojet stated that it is cooperating with the Ministry of Health, Port Health Services, and other relevant authorities to identify and manage potential contacts.

The Ministry of Health confirmed Kenya's first imported case of Bundibugyo Ebola Virus Disease. The patient, a Kenyan who had lived in the Democratic Republic of Congo for seven years, traveled from DRC to Kampala by road before boarding the Jambojet flight to Nairobi. The patient presented symptoms consistent with viral haemorrhagic fever and was admitted to Nairobi Hospital before being transferred to an isolation facility.

According to the Ministry of Health, tests conducted at the National Virology Reference Laboratory and KEMRI confirmed the diagnosis of Bundibugyo Ebola Virus Disease. Unfortunately, the patient later died. The ministry identified 28 initial contacts, including family members and healthcare workers, and was working to trace a further 23 passengers and four crew members who were on the same flight.

Jambojet emphasized that the health and safety of its passengers, crew, and staff remain its highest priority. The airline urged the public to rely on official information regarding the situation. The collaboration between Jambojet and health authorities aims to mitigate any potential risk of further transmission.

The Ministry of Health's efforts to contain the outbreak involved tracing contacts and taking measures to prevent the spread of the disease. The identification and management of contacts are crucial in controlling the outbreak. Authorities continue to work to ensure that all necessary measures are taken.

The case has highlighted the importance of preparedness and response to public health emergencies. Kenya's healthcare system and authorities have been working to strengthen their response to potential health threats. The incident underscores the need for continued vigilance and cooperation between airlines, health authorities, and other stakeholders.

Jambojet's cooperation with authorities demonstrates the airline's commitment to the health and safety of its passengers and staff. The incident will likely lead to a review of protocols and procedures for handling potential health emergencies on flights.
