Jaguar has introduced the Type 01, a luxury four-door electric grand tourer that marks the brand's new design philosophy. The vehicle boasts a tri-motor setup, delivering up to 757 kW and 1,365 N.m of torque. This makes it the most powerful Jaguar road car to date. The Type 01 is built on the JEA body architecture, a new platform unique to Jaguar, and is designed, engineered, and manufactured in the United Kingdom.
The Type 01 features a sleek design with a low roofline, short front overhang, long bonnet, and extended rear overhang. It is equipped with 23-inch wheels and incorporates advanced aerodynamics, including Active Vanes and a deployable spoiler. These features contribute to a drag coefficient of 0.23, making it the most aerodynamic Jaguar to date. The vehicle is available in various paint options, including gloss colours and satin finishes.
The tri-motor drive system of the Type 01, combined with Intelligent Torque Vectoring, enables the vehicle to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and from 100-180 km/h in 4.0 seconds. The car features a 50:50 weight distribution and offers two driving characters. Jaguar drew on its experience from the Jaguar TCS Racing Formula E team, a double world champion, to develop the vehicle's driving dynamics.
The Type 01 is powered by an 118 kWh usable battery and features an 850-volt architecture. This setup provides an anticipated EPA range of up to 644 km and up to 720 km on the WLTP cycle. The vehicle's sustained highway speed range is up to 514 km. With 350 kW DC charging, the Type 01 can gain up to 321 km of range in just 13 minutes, allowing for 99.7% of journeys to be completed without interruption.
Inside the Type 01, a central spine runs the length of the cabin, creating four individual spaces. The interior features a 24-inch single glass OLED Interactive Driver Display, which runs the new Jaguar Infotainment system. A seven-inch touchscreen between the driver and front passenger controls key functions. The vehicle is equipped with the Jaguar Immersive Sound System, which includes a full-width, full-range Panoramic Soundbar.
Rawdon Glover, Managing Director of Jaguar, stated that the Type 01 is the foundation of the brand, representing a commitment to uncompromising design and engineering. The vehicle's development involved over 360 patent applications, making it Jaguar's most technically advanced model yet.
Pricing, specifications, and a launch date for South Africa have not been announced. The Type 01 represents a significant milestone for Jaguar as it moves towards a fully electric future. The vehicle's advanced technology and performance capabilities make it a strong contender in the luxury electric vehicle market.
