Jaguar has unveiled the production version of its highly anticipated Type 01, a luxury electric vehicle that marks a significant shift towards electrification for the British carmaker. The global unveiling took place in New York on October 6, where Jaguar showcased the sleek and technologically advanced EV. The Type 01 is described as a luxury four-door GT that offers a unique driving experience, with a tagline “A copy of nothing” coined by company founder William Lyons. This new model represents a major reboot for Jaguar, known for its powerful petrol cars.
The Jaguar Type 01 boasts a dramatic presence, with a length of 5,235mm, similar to a Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Its monolithic styling features clean surfacing and dramatic proportions, making it the most aerodynamic production Jaguar to date, with a coefficient of drag of 0.23 Cd. The rear of the car is characterised by horizontal slats with hidden tail lights and no rear window, instead using a camera to project the rear view onto a dashboard screen. This design approach is said to be a distillation of Jaguar’s past, reimagined for a luxury electric GT of the future.
The Type 01 is powered by three electric motors, one at the front and two at the rear, drawing on know-how from Jaguar’s Formula E car. The all-wheel-drive system produces 757kW of power and 1,365Nm of torque, enabling a 0-100km/h sprint in 3.2 seconds. A 118kWh battery and 850V architecture provide an anticipated WLTP driving range of up to 720km. The car also supports rapid DC charging, allowing for up to 321km of range in just 13 minutes using a 350kW charger.
To ensure a sporty GT-like ride and handling, the Type 01 features 50-50 weight distribution, intelligent torque vectoring, and adaptive air suspension. The car also has four-wheel steering, which provides high-speed stability while enabling a compact turning circle similar to a medium-sized hatchback. These features combined aim to deliver a unique driving experience that sets the Type 01 apart from other electric vehicles.
Inside the Type 01, a central spine runs the length of the cabin, creating individual spaces for each occupant. The minimalist cabin features brass-inspired elements and a dominant Interactive Driver Display – a 24″ single glass OLED screen in front of the driver. An additional 7″ console between the driver and front passenger provides easy access to key controls. The audio system includes a panoramic sound bar and speakers in the seats, further enhancing the luxury experience.
Jaguar MD Rawdon Glover described the Type 01 as the first Jaguar production car born under the modernist creative philosophy. He emphasised that the car’s design and technology represent the best of Jaguar’s past, distilled into a luxury electric GT of the future. With its advanced features and powerful performance, the Type 01 is poised to make a significant impact in the luxury electric vehicle market.
The Jaguar Type 01 is expected to go on sale in early 2027, with a starting price of £120,000 (about R2.6m) in the UK. However, it is not yet confirmed whether the car will be offered in South Africa. As Jaguar continues to electrify its lineup, the Type 01 marks an exciting new chapter for the brand, one that blends performance, luxury, and sustainability.
