On Thursday, Deacon Chris Iyovwaye, the New Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate in Delta State, officially opened his 2027 campaign headquarters in Asaba. The event was attended by prominent figures, including Peter Obi and former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege. The headquarters, located along Dr Chimokwu Way, off Mariam Babangida Road, will serve as the central hub for Iyovwaye's campaign, coordinating statewide consultations, policy development, and grassroots mobilisation.
Iyovwaye outlined the focus areas of his campaign, which include security, healthcare, transportation, and housing. He emphasized that his administration aims to improve the welfare and economic prospects of Deltans. According to Iyovwaye, the campaign's goal is to enhance the quality of life for every Deltan by addressing critical areas that impact their daily lives. Iyovwaye also addressed the issue of endorsements by traditional rulers and elite groups, stating that such endorsements would not determine the outcome of the 2027 election. He emphasized that the people of Delta State would decide their own future at the ballot box, and that elite endorsements do not guarantee electoral victory. Omo-Agege, who spoke at the event, identified power supply, unemployment, and healthcare as key issues requiring attention in Delta State.
Omo-Agege pledged support for the NDC candidates and promised to work towards protecting the party's votes during the election. He stated that the NDC was targeting all three senatorial seats and a majority of the House of Representatives seats in the state. Peter Obi, who also spoke at the inauguration, backed the Delta campaign and called for accountable leadership and greater transparency in the management of public resources.
Obi emphasized the need for citizens to be able to track how government funds are spent, and stressed the importance of moving Nigeria from consumption to production. He also called for reforms in healthcare and a reduction in medical tourism, stating that an NDC administration would seek to improve hospitals in the region and make them functional. Obi further noted that residents should benefit more directly from the resources generated from the Niger Delta region.
The Iyovwaye Campaign Council announced that the headquarters would be used to coordinate community engagements and town hall meetings across the state. The event was also attended by the party's Delta North senatorial candidate, Victor Ochei, and Delta South candidate, Adowei Binaebi, among other party leaders, stakeholders, and supporters.
