Stakeholders in Nigeria's fertility sector are advocating for increased public education and emotional support for individuals facing fertility challenges. They emphasize that greater knowledge is necessary to help patients comprehend assisted reproductive treatment. This call to action was made at a recent forum organized by the Fertility Awareness Advocacy Initiative and Nordica Fertility Centre.
Dr. Abayomi Ajayi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Nordica Fertility Centre, highlighted the importance of empathetic communication from healthcare providers, particularly when discussing treatment outcomes with patients. He noted that fertility treatment involves significant emotional investment and that patients may experience considerable distress when a cycle fails. Ajayi stressed that healthcare providers should validate patients' emotions while explaining the outcome and possible next steps.
Ajayi also emphasized the need for patients to understand the IVF process, rather than relying solely on doctors to handle everything. He stated that patients require adequate information to comprehend the treatment, including the reasons behind specific recommendations and the factors that may influence treatment outcomes. According to Ajayi, patients can only understand why a treatment has failed if they know how it works.
Dr. Jesse Atongo, a gynaecologist and fertility expert, identified lifestyle as a significant factor influencing fertility treatment outcomes. He urged patients to be mindful of habits that may affect reproductive health, such as smoking, marijuana use, and shisha consumption. Atongo recommended that patients discuss their lifestyle and relevant factors with their healthcare providers to optimize treatment.
Atongo also highlighted the benefits of open forums in providing a platform for people to ask questions they may not feel comfortable asking during individual consultations. He cautioned against quoting a single IVF success rate without considering patients' ages and characteristics, emphasizing that each patient's needs should be considered individually.
The Fertility Awareness Advocacy Initiative, established to create a support system for people navigating infertility and fertility treatment, aims to encourage individuals who have successfully undergone IVF to share their experiences. Vice President of the initiative, Vivian Patrick, noted that the infertility journey can be difficult and that people undergoing treatment need emotional support and encouragement to feel less isolated.
The initiative seeks to reduce the stigma surrounding fertility challenges by promoting awareness and providing a support system for those affected. By fostering a culture of understanding and empathy, stakeholders hope to improve the overall experience of individuals undergoing fertility treatment in Nigeria. Key factors, including lifestyle and emotional support, will play a crucial role in shaping the future of fertility care.
