Italy is leading a 1-million-euro project funded by the European Union to support Algeria in developing its national organic farming system and enhancing its agricultural quality certification. The project, launched on September 25, 2026, will run for 24 months and involves collaboration with France. The initiative aims to establish a regulatory framework aligned with European and international standards.
The project focuses on two main areas: developing Algeria's national organic farming system and establishing an agricultural quality certification, known as LAQ. The first area involves supporting Algerian authorities in preparing standards, implementing regulatory texts, and defining responsibilities for various bodies. The second area involves creating five pilot supply chain specifications to promote high-quality agricultural products.
The project is being implemented through an institutional twinning mechanism, which enables the exchange of expertise and experiences between European public administrations and their Algerian counterparts. The Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Forestry is the main partner, while the French Ministry of Agriculture participates as a co-partner. The project also involves the Algerian Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries.
The launch event, held at the National Chamber of Agriculture, was attended by various stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, EU, Italian, and French ambassadors, and members of the National Chamber of Agriculture. The event featured presentations on the project's objectives, axes, and implementation mechanisms.
The project includes initiatives to raise awareness about organic farming and agricultural quality certification, as well as support for developing a national logo. A national information portal will also be created to provide information on organic farming and quality certification. The project aims to enhance the regulatory framework for organic farming in Algeria and promote high-quality agricultural products.
The project's implementation involves collaboration with various stakeholders, including producers, manufacturers, professional organizations, and technical bodies. The experience and expertise of Italian and French partners will be adapted to the Algerian context through training programs and methodological exchanges. The project also includes an exhibition showcasing various organic products from different regions of Algeria.
The project is expected to contribute to the development of Algeria's organic farming sector and enhance the competitiveness of its agricultural products. Over two years, the project will support the strengthening of the regulatory framework, the development of control and certification mechanisms, and the promotion of high-quality agricultural products.
