Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zeid announced on Thursday that October 1 marks the beginning of a serious process to address the issue of weapons outside state control. He also stated that the government will start purchasing a complete air defense system and legislate a law on the Popular Mobilization Forces. In a statement, Al-Zeid congratulated the Iraqi people on the occasion, describing it as a great day and a significant national achievement.

Al-Zeid emphasized that the achievement of comprehensive national sovereignty is a great national accomplishment that Iraqis can be proud of. This was made possible by the blessings of God and the significant role played by the Supreme Religious Authority, which mobilized Iraqis to defend their country through a fatwa of jihad. The fatwa led to the formation of a popular movement and the involvement of various factions that played a crucial role in confronting the terrorist organization ISIS.

The Prime Minister highlighted that October 1, 2026, marks the beginning of a serious process to address the issue of weapons outside state control. He emphasized the government's commitment to constitutional obligations, following a clear roadmap and agreed-upon timelines that will not exceed June 30, 2027. The government aims to disarm all non-Iraqi armed groups present on Iraqi territory while preserving the country's security, stability, and border control.

Al-Zeid stressed that the Iraqi government is committed to preventing the use of Iraqi territory or airspace as a launching pad or passage for any action that threatens the security of neighboring countries. The government also rejects the use of any country's territory or airspace to attack Iraq, based on the principles of mutual sovereignty, good neighborliness, and non-interference in internal affairs.

The Prime Minister announced that the government will support security institutions by purchasing a complete air defense system to enhance Iraq's comprehensive air sovereignty. Additionally, the government will legislate a law on the Popular Mobilization Forces and solidify its position within the security structure as an integral part of it, under the command of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

As Iraq concludes this long period of wars, confronting terrorism, and breaches of national sovereignty, the country looks forward to a new phase of achieving comprehensive national sovereignty. This new phase aims to enhance civil peace, stability, and prosperity, and to direct the state's capabilities and resources toward sustainable development, improving citizens' lives, and providing necessary services.

Al-Zeid emphasized that October 1 represents the beginning of a new phase in Iraq's journey, a state with complete sovereignty, strong institutions, and adherence to the constitution, law, and international law principles. The country will engage with its regional and international environment through balanced relations based on mutual interests and respect.
