Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has stated that negotiations with the United States are "meaningless". He made these comments on Monday, as diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing Middle East conflict remain stalled. According to Iran's state news agency, IRNA, Pezeshkian accused Washington of using diplomatic talks to prepare for further attacks against Iran. He cited three previous instances where the US had attacked Iran after holding talks.

The conflict between the US and Iran began in late February, when the two countries launched surprise attacks on Iran while negotiations over Iran's nuclear programme were underway. Although a memorandum of understanding was reached in June, subsequent negotiations stalled after Iranian attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz triggered renewed US military operations. Indirect discussions held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly failed to yield a breakthrough.

Pezeshkian's comments reflect Iran's skepticism about the US's intentions. He stated that the US's actions, including assassinations, sanctions, pressure, and threats, demonstrate that it is not seeking dialogue but rather aims to overthrow the Islamic Republic of Iran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also ruled out a military solution on Sunday, warning that Tehran would strengthen its defenses if attacks resumed.

The US and Israel have argued that military action is necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. However, Tehran has repeatedly denied pursuing a nuclear weapons programme. The Strait of Hormuz has become a major focus of the conflict due to its importance to global shipping and energy markets. Iran has sought to restrict maritime traffic through the strategic waterway since the conflict began.

The conflict has had significant consequences for maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency reported that a tanker was struck while attempting to pass through the waterway on Sunday. Another vessel turned back on Monday after Iranian forces threatened to attack it. The US has responded to Iran's actions by imposing a counterblockade on Iranian ports and attacking vessels it accuses of breaching restrictions.

Araghchi emphasized that only negotiations based on justice and fairness could bring the conflict to an end. He rejected a military solution and new sanctions, stating that they would not resolve the issue. The US, on the other hand, has shifted its focus towards economic pressure while reducing military operations. The US has not carried out strikes against Iran since September 1.

The situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains volatile, with tensions between the US and Iran showing no signs of easing. The conflict has significant implications for global shipping and energy markets. Diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict remain stalled, and it remains to be seen whether a new approach can be found to address the underlying issues.
