The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has announced that over 145,000 individuals have been displaced in eight Yemeni governorates since the conflict escalated on the western coast in June. According to the IOM report, a total of 145,308 people, or 24,218 families, have been displaced, representing an increase of 15,870 people compared to September 21, and a rise of over 12% in just one week.
The IOM report highlights that insecurity continues to drive families to flee along the western coast and in southern regions. The organization's Yemen mission head, Abd al-astar Isuyf, emphasized the urgent need for assistance, stating that behind the statistics are families, including parents trying to protect their children, elderly individuals who cannot travel far, and families who already had limited resources.
The governorate of Taiz remains the epicenter of the crisis, hosting the largest number of displaced individuals, with 81,444 people, or more than half of the national total. This number has increased by nearly 8,000 displaced people compared to the previous week. Other governorates, including Lahj, Aden, Al-Hudaydah, Abyan, Hadhramaut, Ma'rib, and Al-Mahr, are also hosting significant numbers of displaced individuals.
Outside of Taiz, Aden has recorded the largest increase in displaced individuals, with a 40% rise in just one week, adding 3,510 people. The Al-Burayqah district alone is hosting approximately 6,500 people. As more families move to urban areas, pressure on housing, services, and livelihoods, which were already under strain, is increasing.
The IOM has also noted a rapid increase in displaced individuals in eastern regions, with numbers nearly doubling in Hadhramaut and rising by two-thirds in Abyan during the same period. The organization is calling for the protection of civilians and humanitarian workers, as well as ensuring safe and unhindered access to displaced families and host communities.
