The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has urged stakeholders to strengthen collaboration, coordination, and communication to ensure peaceful, credible, and successful conduct of the 2027 General Elections. This call was made by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Alhaji Shehu Wahab, at an Electoral Risk Management (ERM) Sensitisation Workshop in Lokoja. The workshop was part of INEC's preparations for the 2027 general elections.
According to the REC, the successful conduct of elections requires deliberate planning, effective coordination, and collective commitment from all institutions and individuals involved in the electoral process. The workshop provided an opportunity for stakeholders to exchange experiences, clarify expectations, and strengthen communication channels needed for effective electoral planning and implementation.
The REC emphasized the importance of cooperation among security agencies, civil society organizations, the media, and other relevant stakeholders in addressing challenges that might arise before, during, and after the elections. He stressed that INEC remained committed to promoting a common understanding of electoral responsibilities, strengthening institutional relationships, and encouraging a coordinated approach to election risk management.
The REC urged participants to remain proactive and committed to their respective responsibilities, emphasizing that sustained engagement among stakeholders was essential to achieving the shared objective of peaceful elections. He encouraged participants to share their experiences and insights during the sessions to improve collective understanding of Nigeria's electoral environment and build public confidence in the electoral process.
The REC expressed confidence that continued cooperation, professionalism, and commitment among stakeholders would contribute to strengthening democracy in Nigeria. The Kogi State Coordinator of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mrs Ayedime Aileku, also spoke at the workshop.
Mrs Aileku stated that her agency would embark on grassroots sensitization campaigns to educate residents on voter apathy and electoral violence ahead of the elections. She expressed optimism that the sensitization programs would improve voters' attitudes towards the electoral process and encourage greater participation in the elections.
The INEC's effort to engage stakeholders and promote a coordinated approach to election risk management is a crucial step towards ensuring the success of the 2027 General Elections. By working together, stakeholders can address challenges and promote a peaceful and credible electoral process.
