The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has expressed concerns about the impact of unverified allegations of electoral fraud on voter confidence. Speaking at the 10th Annual Conference of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), Amupitan emphasized the need for responsible journalism and accurate reporting, particularly in the lead-up to the 2027 elections. He stressed that fake news and sensationalized reports can directly destroy public trust and incite civil unrest.

Amupitan highlighted the critical role of the media in shaping public perception of the electoral process. He noted that inaccurate reports have consequences beyond the immediate news cycle and can undermine institutional legitimacy. The INEC Chairman called on online publishers to prioritize accuracy and avoid using clickbait headlines and unverified information in election reporting. He also urged them to provide proper context when reporting operational challenges during elections.

The INEC boss proposed a three-point partnership with GOCOP, including dedicated digital fact-verification, stronger editorial self-regulation, and a national voter education partnership. He emphasized that online publishers have become primary storytellers and narrative custodians of Nigeria's democracy. Amupitan asked them to use their platforms to strengthen public understanding of the electoral process, including voter education and the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

Amupitan assured that INEC would continue to strengthen its systems ahead of the 2027 elections. The commission is deploying artificial intelligence for data auditing and cyber defense in partnership with Google and Microsoft. Amupitan stated that these technological measures aim to ensure that public confidence in the 2027 elections is based on verifiable processes rather than assurances.

The INEC Chairman disclosed that the commission is directly engaging with Resident Electoral Commissioners, Administrative Secretaries, and other officials to identify operational gaps and implement corrective measures. Comprehensive training is underway for election personnel, focusing on electoral administration, technology handling, conflict mitigation, and legal compliance.

INEC has commenced early procurement and distribution of non-sensitive electoral materials to its 36 state offices and the FCT. This early procurement provides sufficient time for batching, inventory auditing, and distribution to the 774 LGAs ahead of the polls. The commission has also procured brand-new operational pick-up vehicles to State Offices and LGAs nationwide to resolve field transportation bottlenecks.

The INEC leadership is working to ensure that public trust in the electoral process is built through transparent elections. Amupitan called on all stakeholders, including the media, to recognize their shared responsibility for building public trust in the process. The commission's efforts aim to ensure that the 2027 elections are conducted with integrity and transparency.
