The Indian Navy successfully rescued all 20 crew members of an Iranian fishing vessel, Azini, which was hijacked by armed pirates off the northeastern coast of Somalia on October 29. The rescue operation, which lasted 48 hours, was carried out by Indian naval forces in coordination with its air power. The vessel and its crew were safely recovered on November 2, with no casualties reported.

The Indian Navy received information about the hijacking and immediately deployed a warship, supported by a maritime surveillance aircraft, to locate and intercept the hijacked vessel. The navy tracked the vessel's movements, taking measures to restrict its mobility and prevent escape. A special forces team, known as MARCOS, was then dispatched to the vessel on a C-17 transport aircraft.

The MARCOS team boarded the vessel, overpowered the pirates, and regained control of the ship, freeing all 20 hostages. The operation was conducted over 3,000 kilometers from the Indian city of Mumbai, demonstrating the Indian Navy's capability to conduct long-range rescue missions in the Indian Ocean region.

Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh praised the Indian Navy and all personnel involved in the operation, highlighting their readiness and ability to respond to maritime security threats. He stated that the swift rescue of the vessel and its crew demonstrated India's commitment to ensuring the safety of maritime trade and stability in the Indian Ocean.

The rescue operation comes amid renewed concerns about Somali piracy, which had previously peaked between 2008 and 2012. Although international naval operations and enhanced security measures had subsequently reduced attacks, the resurgence of pirate activities since late 2023 has raised concerns about the security of shipping lanes in the Indian Ocean, the Gulf of Aden, and the Red Sea.

The Indian Navy has stated that it will continue to intensify efforts to protect maritime trade and ensure the safety of vessels transiting the Indian Ocean region. The operation demonstrates India's commitment to regional security and its capability to respond to emerging threats.

The incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by vessels operating in the Indian Ocean and the importance of international cooperation to combat piracy. The Indian Navy's successful rescue operation is a testament to its capabilities and preparedness to address maritime security challenges.
