India's 80th Independence Day was celebrated in Maseru, Lesotho, with a diplomatic event that highlighted the growing partnership between India and Lesotho. India and Lesotho have been strengthening their bilateral relations, which were established on June 8, 1971. The two countries have been cooperating in areas such as education, healthcare, agriculture, information technology, and skills development. The appointment of Dr. Korah as Honorary Consul has been hailed as a new chapter in the long-standing friendship between Lesotho and India.
The sixth meeting of the Joint Bilateral Commission for Cooperation (JBCC) was held in New Delhi on July 30, where both countries reviewed their bilateral engagement and advanced discussions on proposed Memoranda of Understanding. India also reiterated its invitation for Lesotho to join the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.
India has provided substantial assistance to Lesotho, including an Indian Army Training Team established in 2001 and the India-Lesotho Centre for Advanced Education in Information Technology established in 2017. In April 2025, India donated 1,000 metric tonnes of rice and 1,000 metric tonnes of sorghum to Lesotho as a gesture of goodwill.
The Lesotho government has appreciated India's contributions to global peace, education, and innovation, and praised India's spirit of solidarity towards Lesotho. Law Minister Richard Ramoeletsi highlighted bilateral cooperation in trade, agriculture, education, and communication, and appreciated India's scholarship programmes, which have contributed to the development of Basotho.
The Indian Association of Lesotho has thanked the Government and people of Lesotho for their continued friendship and support. The association has organized periodic functions and hosted cultural performances, and there are about 4,000 Indian expatriates living in Lesotho, working as professionals and engaged in business. The 7th Session of the Joint Bilateral Commission for Cooperation is scheduled to be convened in Maseru in 2027, promising continued strengthening of ties between India and Lesotho.
